What basic types of survey are there?

The most basic survey undertaken is a Preliminary Ecology Survey (aka Ecological Survey or Phase 1 Survey), which assesses the habitats on site and gives predictions on what species might be present. It will also highlight which protected species surveys may be necessary, such as;

  • Bat Surveys: Daytime inspections for evidence of bats and nocturnal surveys to establish use of the site by bats.
  • Great Crested Newt surveys: Investigating likelihood of newts being present with the Habitat Suitability Index (HSI) and nocturnal surveys using high-power torches and nets to catch/spot live specimens.
